Skilfulness takes time and life is short.
기술을 습득하는 데는 시간이 걸리고 인생은 짧다.
히포크라테스가 말한 이 문구를
"예술은 길고 인생은 짧다."로
그 의미를 잘못 알고 있었다.
"한 사람의 전문 지식(히포크라테스가 언급한 전문 지식은 의학)을 습득하고 완성하는 데는 오랜 시간이 걸리고, 그것을 할 수 있는 시간은 짧다."

삶은 짧은데 배워야 할 것은 많고 습득해야 할 것은 많다는 의미였다.
전문성을 가지려면 끝도 없이 배우고 갈고 닦아야 한다는 의미였다.
독서... 삶의 필수 요소 였던 것이었다.
